Award Winners Announced
Dartmoor
National Park Authority
The 2002 winners
of the Dartmoor National Park Authority's biannual Edward Morshead Award
have been announced. Bill Cann, Dartmoor National Park Authority Chairman,
and Mrs Sue Morshead will jointly present the Award at a ceremony, at
Dartmoor National Park Authority's Headquarters, on 31 January 2003. The
Award is made in recognition of significant contributions to National
Park purposes ie the protection, maintenance and enhancement of the scenic
beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of Dartmoor, and the promotion
of the understanding and enjoyment of its special qualities.
The Edward Morshead
Award first prize goes to Mark Steer and Rosemary Garforth for the Bridford
Community Garden. The garden provides a unique and welcoming place for
villagers and visitors to meet and enjoy wonderful views of Dartmoor.
The design and creation of the garden reflects the essence of the wider
Dartmoor landscape, with easy paths and features for all to enjoy.
Second prize has
been awarded to High Moorland Community Action (HMCA), for outstanding
community work in Dartmoor Forest Parish. The HMCA team has worked closely
with the Duchy of Cornwall, agencies and local authorities to tackle a
wide range of problems and issues within a relatively isolated National
Park community.
Third prize is an
award to Hastoe Housing Association, for the Widecombe-in-the-Moor
housing scheme. This scheme provides affordable
housing for local people, and was carried out
with detailed attention to the high
standards and quality appropriate to a site within one of Dartmoor's most
popular villages.
This year Special
Awards are presented to Imerys and Watts Blake Bearne Minerals, for outstanding
contribution to the conservation of landscape and cultural heritage on
Dartmoor.
The two companies
jointly relinquished long standing permissions
to work and tip on parts of Shaugh Moor and the
Blackabrook Valley in south west Dartmoor, thus
safeguarding for the future this much loved and
visited moorland, containing a wealth of historic
remains and rich in natural beauty.
Certificates of High Commendation, in recognition of meritorious contributions
to the purposes of the National Park, will also be presented to:
- Ted Birkett-Dixon,
for outstanding contribution to the enjoyment
and
archaeological conservation of Dartmoor.
- Robert Jones,
for bird conservation work on Dartmoor.
- Moretonhampstead
Development Trust, for Dartmoor Flight, the Moretonhampstead public
Arts Project.
- Sylvia Moore,
for her outstanding work as a Voluntary Warden.
- Dave Hannaford,
for longstanding practical contribution to the conservation of Dartmoor's
cultural heritage.
The Dartmoor Preservation
Association Shield, in recognition of the best
contribution by young people to conservation on
Dartmoor, will be presented to Mannamead Outreach
Group, for sustained voluntary conservation work
in support of National Park Rangers. Colin Turner,
Chairman of the Association, and Mrs
Morshead will present the Shield.
In coming to their
decisions the judges were impressed by the wide range of activities carried
out by individuals, groups and organisations, all for the benefit of Dartmoor.
They acknowledged the contribution and achievements of all the entries
nominated for the Award.
